Chipmunk in Camouflage

by Douglas Twitchell
Nature's Camouflage - a chipmunk sitting on a log in the woods is not an easy thing to spot!

I painted this scene in part because I thought the chipmunk was so doggone cute, but also because I was very interested by the natural camouflage. Notice how the chipmunk's coloring matches the earth tones - the browns and reds and yellows of the ground, the trees, and the fallen leaves.

In real life the ground was considerably darker than this. I modified it because, although the point was to capture Nature's Camouflage, I didn't want the viewer to have to look twice to find the subject of the painting!
